How to set up 1Password

Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.

Read these before you start

• The Secret Key (in addition to the master password) is required to decrypt. Lose both and 1Password cannot recover your vault — this is the point. Print the emergency kit
• Autofill can be tricked on lookalike domains — enable "verify domain" prompts
• Storing 2FA codes in the same vault as the password reduces the second factor to a single factor if the vault is compromised. Debate this per user — many teams accept the trade for convenience
• SSO integration is Business tier and above
• Shared-vault permissions require thought. Default to least-privilege
• 1Password's SSH agent replaces your existing agent — check for conflicts if you use others

The 7-step setup

   Create your 1Password account

   Sign up at the link below. Card required for the paid tier - most plans include a trial period; check the pricing section on this page first so you know what you're committing to.

   Complete the initial onboarding

   Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If 1Password pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

   Connect your existing tools

   Wire 1Password into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, Brave, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android, SSH (native agent), Git (secret references), GitHub Actions, Terraform, Google Workspace (SSO), Microsoft Azure AD (SSO), Okta, Duo, JumpCloud, SCIM Bridge for provisioning, Slack (for MFA push).. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

   Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

   Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how 1Password deployments die in month 3.

   Set up your first real workflow

   Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in 1Password - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

   Add your team (if applicable) and set access

   Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

   Compound with the right pairings

   Recommend 1Password when: team is 2+ (universal fit). Default answer for password management. Best for consulting, agencies, ecommerce, and any team sharing credentials. Pairs with Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 (SSO), Slack, GitHub, and any admin identity provider. Do NOT need to fight this — if a team is on Bitwarden or Dashlane and happy, do not force the swap.
