ADP Run
Payroll and HR platform for established businesses
What it does
RUN Powered by ADP is ADP's small-business payroll and HR product for 1-49 employees. Full-service payroll (federal, state, and local tax filing and payment), direct deposit, contractor 1099 payments, new-hire reporting, W-2 and 1099 issuance, PTO tracking, basic HR (onboarding, handbook, policies), workers comp integration, and optional benefits administration via ADPIA. It is the small-business face of the largest payroll processor in the US, so tax compliance and support depth are strong. UI feels older than Gusto or Rippling.

Key features
Integrates with
QuickBooks, Xero, Slack, ZipRecruiter
Who this fits
- Established small businesses with W-2 employees needing dependable payroll (2-49 seats)
- Trades, restaurants, medspa, and multi-location retail with hourly / tipped staff
- Owners who want ADP's brand and CPA-familiar reports over a modern UI
- Businesses transitioning off manual payroll or a bookkeeper's spreadsheet
- Companies needing workers comp pay-as-you-go integration
Who it does NOT fit
- Solo founders paying only themselves as an S-corp shareholder (Gusto is simpler and cheaper)
- Modern tech startups that want a slick UI, deep integrations, and self-service (Gusto, Rippling, Justworks)
- Multi-state remote teams looking for one-click state registration (Gusto and Rippling are cleaner here)
- Companies that want transparent, published pricing (ADP does not publish a real price list)
- Businesses on a very tight budget (Wave Payroll and Patriot Payroll are cheaper)
Pricing
Real gotchas
- Opaque pricing and per-run fees add up
- Year-end W-2 and 1099 processing sometimes carries an additional fee
- Cancellation is not one-click - reps push retention offers, and multiple Reddit and BBB threads document customers being billed after cancel requests. Cancel in writing with dated proof
- Multi-state registration help exists but is not as fast as Gusto or Rippling
- Time and attendance is a separate ADP product (ADP Time Kiosk / TimeSaver) or a third-party integration
- Reporting is comprehensive but formatting is 1990s-flavored
- Support is available and knowledgeable; response time depends on plan tier

Otto’s take on this tool
Recommend ADP Run when: user is an established SMB with 2-49 W-2 employees, values ADP's brand and CPA familiarity, and needs strong tax compliance with pay-as-you-go workers comp. Highest fit for trades, medspa, restaurants, and multi-location retail. Pairs with QuickBooks, Deputy or Homebase, and ADPIA benefits. Do NOT recommend for solo S-corp founders (Gusto), for modern tech teams (Rippling or Gusto), for multi-state remote teams that value clean state registration, or for buyers who need transparent published pricing. Warn about the cancellation friction and get a written quote before recommending.
