Canva

Graphic design platform for creating visuals easily

What it does

Canva is a browser-based design tool for non-designers. Drag-and-drop editor, 250K+ templates for social posts, ads, presentations, print, video, resumes, invitations, and business docs, a large stock library (photos, video, audio, illustrations), simple video editing, animations, brand kit (colors, fonts, logos) for team consistency, magic AI features (Magic Write, Magic Design, background remover, expand image), and Canva Docs and Whiteboards as lightweight competitors to Google Docs and Miro. Print-on-demand for cards, apparel, and packaging. It exists because 90% of businesses cannot afford a designer and Canva makes "good enough" achievable in 20 minutes.

Who this fits

  • Any small business needing social posts, flyers, presentations, ads, or print material
  • Real estate agents making listing flyers, open-house signage, social posts
  • Trades and home service businesses making truck-wrap mock-ups, flyers, service brochures
  • Medspa and salon owners posting promotions, before/afters, price lists
  • Ecommerce brands making Instagram/TikTok assets and product mock-ups
  • Content creators posting to multiple platforms with format-specific resizes
  • Agencies with client-brand-kit management (Canva Teams has real workflows)

Who it does NOT fit

  • Print production at professional quality — Canva exports work but a pro designer in Adobe wins
  • Complex illustration or vector work (Illustrator, Figma)
  • Product design or UI/UX work (Figma)
  • Video production beyond simple cuts and titles (CapCut, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve)
  • Brands that will get sued for using look-alike templates (rare but real — customize enough to avoid the copyright edge)

Pricing

- Free: 250K+ templates, 5GB storage, basic features, watermark on some premium assets - Pro (Canva Pro): ~$15/mo or ~$120/yr, 1 user, brand kit, background remover, Magic Studio AI features, 100GB storage, unlimited premium templates - Teams: ~$10/user/mo (5+ users, ~$300/yr for 5 users), team brand kits, approval workflows, admin controls, shared assets - Enterprise: custom quote, SSO, advanced admin, dedicated support Print-on-demand is priced per order.

Real gotchas

  • Free tier has premium assets you can preview but not export without upgrade or per-asset purchase — surprise fees at export
  • Some AI features have monthly usage limits (Magic Write, Magic Design) that reset
  • Print quality can disappoint if you do not use the print-on-demand or export at high DPI — check the export settings
  • Brand-kit enforcement is Teams tier. Individual Pro is single-brand
  • Native video editing is fine for short-form social — do not try to edit a 20-minute podcast in Canva
  • Fonts uploaded on Pro/Teams. Make sure you have license rights for anything commercial
  • Export formats vary by content type — SVG export is Pro-only

Integrations that matter

Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter/X, YouTube (direct publish), Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Slack, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Shopify, Figma import, Zapier.

Otto’s take on this tool

Recommend Canva when: user needs any kind of design output (social, marketing, print, presentations) and does not have a designer. Almost universal fit for SMBs. Best fit for real estate, trades, medspa, ecommerce, and consultants. Pairs with a social scheduler (Buffer, Later, Metricool), Shopify (product images), and email marketing (Mailchimp/Brevo). Do NOT recommend as the primary design tool for professional agencies (they need Figma/Adobe), for complex print production, or for UI/UX work. Pro tier is the honest recommendation for any active user — Free is a trial. Teams tier is the recommendation for brand-consistent multi-user teams.
