Email Marketing - Setup Guide

How to set up Constant Contact

Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.

What you're signing up for

Easy, roughly 30 minutes for basic setup.

Read these before you start

  • Actual inbox deliverability has been independently measured at roughly 20% below Constant Contact's own claimed rate, don't repeat their marketed deliverability number to a client as fact, test with the client's real list and content instead (Source: independent deliverability analysis via WebSearch summary, 2026)
  • Pricing is contact-count-based and climbs steadily, model the actual cost at the client's list size and realistic 12-month growth projection before quoting, the entry price is not representative of ongoing cost as the list grows
  • Several integrations depend on Zapier rather than being native, factor in Zapier's own cost and setup complexity if the client needs a specific third-party connection
  • Customer support has drawn its share of complaints despite Constant Contact's reputation for being the "friendly, easy" option, don't assume premium support quality

The 7-step setup

  1. 1

    Create your Constant Contact account

Sign up at the link below. Card required for the paid tier - most plans include a trial period; check the pricing section on this page first so you know what you're committing to.

    Open Constant Contact signup
  2. 2

    Complete the initial onboarding

Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Constant Contact pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

  3. 3

    Connect your existing tools

Wire Constant Contact into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Shopify, WooCommerce, Salesforce, Zapier, Canva.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

  4. 4

Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Constant Contact deployments die in month 3.

  5. 5

Set up your first real workflow

Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Constant Contact - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

  6. 6

Add your team (if applicable) and set access

Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

  7. 7

    Compound with the right pairings

Recommend Constant Contact for traditional local businesses and nonprofits wanting straightforward email marketing without a steep learning curve, especially clients intimidated by more automation-heavy tools like ActiveCampaign or Klaviyo. Model actual cost against the client's list size and growth trajectory rather than quoting only the entry price, and set deliverability expectations conservatively given the gap between claimed and measured rates. For e-commerce specifically, Klaviyo or Drip ...

Pricing you'll hit

Per tools.json: Lite ~$12/mo (500 contacts, basic email), Standard ~$35/mo (500 contacts, automations), Premium ~$80/mo (500 contacts, advanced features), pricing scales up as contact count grows within each tier. Confirm current numbers at constantcontact.com/pricing, and specifically model out cost at the client's actual (and projected) list size, this is a genuinely cost-progressive pricing mod...
