ConvertKit (Kit)
Email marketing platform built for creators and online businesses
What it does
Kit (rebranded from ConvertKit in 2024) is a creator-focused email platform built around the subscriber, not the campaign. One list, tags and segments, visual automation flows, landing pages, forms, paid newsletters, tip jars, and a creator network with recommendations. Kit's differentiator is the creator ecosystem: partner networks, sponsor networks, and a marketplace that helps newsletters grow, not just send. Deliverability is strong, the UX is clean, and the automation builder is one of the more usable ones in the category. It's Mailchimp for people who write.

- Solo and small B2C brands where the email list is the business

Who it does NOT fit

- B2B teams that need real CRM + sales sequences (HubSpot, ActiveCampaign)
- Enterprise marketing teams needing advanced segmentation across CDPs (Braze, Iterable)
- High-volume transactional sending (Postmark, SendGrid)
- Teams that live inside Shopify and want deep ecom triggers (Klaviyo)
Pricing
Real gotchas
- Reporting is fine, not deep. Advanced attribution belongs in a real analytics tool
- Ecommerce integrations exist but are not why you'd pick Kit over Klaviyo for a Shopify store
- Templates are sparse and intentionally plain (Kit's philosophy is "email is a letter")
- No native SMS. Add a tool or skip that channel
- Migrations in from Mailchimp are usually clean; migrations OUT preserve subs but not automation logic
- Paid newsletter revenue share (Kit takes a % of paid subs on some tiers). Read the terms

Otto’s take on this tool
Recommend Kit when: user is a creator, coach, consultant, author, newsletter writer, or course seller; the pain_point is "I need a real email list" or "Mailchimp's list model is fighting me"; and business is B2C info-product or content-led. Pairs with Teachable/Thinkific, Circle, Stripe, and a landing-page tool if design matters more than Kit's built-in templates. Do NOT recommend for ecommerce brands (Klaviyo), B2B outbound (Instantly, Lemlist, HubSpot), or transactional email (Postmark). Highlight the free-tier ceiling (10K subs, single automation) as a real starting point.

“I like Kit a lot better than Mailchimp, my previous list software. Kit is easier to use, and their support is 8000x more responsive and helpful than Mailchimp's.”
TrustPilot4.0/5“We've been a Kit user for about 4 years for our wine travel agency. One unique aspect that has been very powerful for us is the Creator Network.”
TrustPilot5.0/5“Super clean user interface, everything runs smoothly. My newsletter goes out every week with zero issues. Analytics are solid.”
TrustPilot5.0/5“Free plan advertises features you can't actually get. The free Newsletter plan forces a Kit-managed recommendation shown to your subscribers that you cannot see, choose, or control.”
TrustPilot1.0/5“I purchased a $200 service from a seller through the Kit platform, but I never received the service. Kit support told me to open a dispute with my bank.”
TrustPilot1.0/5“So glad I switched to Kit. I was with Active Campaign for 5 years but made the switch to Kit and I'm so glad I did. The interface is so easy to use.”
