Productivity - Setup Guide

How to set up Cursor

Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.

What you're signing up for

Easy. Install, sign in, open your repo. VS Code extensions and settings import automatically. First useful AI edit within 5 minutes. Team rollout adds SSO and rules-file setup — a few hours.

Read these before you start

  • Fast-request limits reset monthly on Pro — heavy users hit the ceiling and get slower model access
  • Composer/Agent mode can make sweeping multi-file changes — review diffs before accepting
  • The AI writes plausible-looking wrong code. Cursor makes bad code faster if you do not review — the productivity multiplier assumes the developer still reads the diff
  • Privacy mode (code not stored/trained on) is on by default for Pro+, but enterprise buyers should verify settings
  • Rules files (.cursor/rules) persist instructions across sessions — use them to encode project standards or the AI drifts
  • Some VS Code extensions have compatibility issues with Cursor's fork — 95% work fine

The 7-step setup

  1. 1

    Create your Cursor account

Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.

    Open Cursor signup
  2. 2

    Complete the initial onboarding

Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Cursor pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

  3. 3

    Connect your existing tools

Wire Cursor into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: VS Code extension ecosystem (nearly all work), GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Git in general, Docker, most language servers, Codeium and other AI tools coexist (though Cursor is designed to be the primary AI layer).. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

  4. 4

Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Cursor deployments die in month 3.

  5. 5

Set up your first real workflow

Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Cursor - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

  6. 6

Add your team (if applicable) and set access

Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

  7. 7

    Compound with the right pairings

Recommend Cursor when: user codes and is not already using an AI-first editor. Highest fit for founder-developers, startups, and small agile teams. Pairs with GitHub, a deploy platform (Vercel, Netlify), Sentry (catch AI-generated bugs), and Linear or GitHub Issues. Do NOT recommend for non-coders, or for teams that already use Claude Code / Aider / Cline and are happy. If the user is on GitHub Copilot and complains about "autocomplete-only" limitations, Cursor is the upgrade. If they need a ful...

Pricing you'll hit

- Hobby: free, limited slow requests to premium models, 2K completions, basic features - Pro: ~$20/mo, unlimited completions, generous fast requests to premium models (Claude Sonnet, GPT-4-class), Composer/Agent access - Business: ~$40/user/mo, org-level admin, SSO, privacy mode enforced, centralized billing, higher limits - Enterprise: custom quote, advanced admin, audit logs, on-prem-adjacent op...
