Productivity - Setup Guide

How to set up Deel

Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.

What you're signing up for

Contractor onboarding for one person: 15-30 minutes (contractor fills their info, signs contract, done). EOR employee: 3-5 business days to full onboarding depending on country (some jurisdictions req

Read these before you start

  • **Contractor-to-employee misclassification risk**: A country determines your "contractor" is really an employee. Deel's standard Contractor product does not protect you. Deel Contractor of Record ($325/mo) or full EOR ($599/mo) does. Do not save the difference and eat the risk.
  • **Complex country compliance**: Some countries (Brazil, Argentina, India) have local rules that even Deel's playbook does not perfectly cover. Real local counsel remains worth it for edge cases.
  • **Overuse for pure US operations**: US PEO at $125/mo per employee is 2x Gusto's Simple tier. Do not put a domestic US team on Deel unless there's a global reason.
  • **Support tickets on obscure countries**: Deel's response times are fine on top-30 countries. Niche jurisdictions can take days.
  • **Integration gaps with older HRIS**: Newer HRIS tools sync cleanly. Legacy on-prem tools may need custom work.

The 7-step setup

  1. 1

    Create your Deel account

Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.

    Open Deel signup
  2. 2

    Complete the initial onboarding

Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Deel pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

  3. 3

    Connect your existing tools

Wire Deel into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: - **QuickBooks Online, Xero, NetSuite** - accounting sync for payroll journals - **Slack** - onboarding notifications and internal HR flows - **HRIS integrations** - BambooHR, Rippling, Namely for HR data sync - **SSO** - Google, Okta, Microsoft (Enterprise tier) - **Greenhouse, Lever, Workable** - .... Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

  4. 4

Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Deel deployments die in month 3.

  5. 5

Set up your first real workflow

Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Deel - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

  6. 6

Add your team (if applicable) and set access

Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

  7. 7

    Compound with the right pairings

    > Example: "For your 12-person remote SaaS startup with 3 US W-2 employees and 9 contractors across Argentina, Portugal, and India, Deel Contractor Premium at $49/mo per contractor lands you at $441/mo for the international team. Contracts are localized, tax forms are auto-generated, and Deel handles the currency conversion so your ops person stops babysitting Wise transfers. Keep Gusto for the 3 US W-2 employees, that stack is cleaner than trying to run everything through Deel's US PEO."

Pricing you'll hit

Deel has several products with distinct pricing: - **Deel Contractor**: $49/mo per active contractor. Localized contracts, compliant invoicing, unlimited payments to that contractor in 150+ countries. This is the sweet spot for most SMBs. - **Deel Contractor of Record**: $325/mo per contractor. Deel takes on the misclassification risk (contractor is really employed by Deel's local entity). For hi...
