ElevenLabs

AI voice generation and text-to-speech platform

What it does

ElevenLabs generates realistic human speech from text and clones voices from short audio samples. It powers most of the voice AI you have heard in the last two years, from podcast narrators to phone agents to YouTube dubs. The core products are text to speech, voice cloning, dubbing (translating a video while keeping the original speaker's voice), speech to text, and a low latency API for real time voice agents. If a competitor sounds robotic and ElevenLabs sounds like a person reading, the difference is not small.

Who this fits

  • Content creators and agencies producing regular audio (podcasts, YouTube voiceovers, ad reads) who currently pay a voice actor or use inferior AI voices
  • Ad agencies making multiple ad variants where a human voice actor per variant is not economical
  • Course creators and training teams shipping hours of narration
  • Product teams building phone agents, voice bots, or IVR systems (via the API and integrations like Retell, Vapi, Bland)
  • Real estate teams running 24/7 inbound answering or outbound follow up voice agents
  • Solo founders wanting to clone their own voice for content at scale without recording every time
  • Media companies dubbing content into other languages

Who it does NOT fit

  • Businesses that need one voiceover per year (use a Fiverr voice actor instead, cheaper and one shot)
  • Teams needing regulated healthcare voice recording with HIPAA in the base tier (Enterprise only, not standard plans)
  • Businesses in categories where synthetic voices are legally restricted (some financial disclosures, some political ad rules) [VERIFY based on jurisdiction]
  • Anyone who thought voice AI was cheap because they read a tweet - real production usage on the Creator tier is closer to $22/mo than $5

Pricing

Everything is measured in credits. Roughly one credit is one character of text to speech on the standard model, so 10,000 credits is about 10 minutes of audio. - Free: 10,000 credits/mo, non-commercial use only, no voice cloning, 3 projects. Enough to test whether the voice quality is worth paying for. Not enough for production. - Starter: $5/mo (or $6/mo per current pricing page, [VERIFY] which is live). 30,000 credits/mo, commercial license unlocked, instant voice cloning (10 second sample), dubbing studio. This is where a solo creator lives. - Creator: $22/mo. 121,000 credits/mo, professional voice cloning (high quality clone from ~30 minutes of source audio), higher quality output. The real "small business" tier. Roughly 2 hours of audio per month. - Pro: $99/mo. 600,000 credits/mo, 192kbps output. For agencies producing daily audio or a phone agent handling low volume traffic. - Scale: $299/mo. 1.8M credits/mo, 3 seats, 3 professional voice clones. For teams. - Business: $990/mo. 6M credits/mo, 10 seats, low latency TTS at 5 cents/minute for voice agents. - Enterprise: custom pricing, HIPAA support, custom SSO. Annual billing runs 12 for 10 (roughly 2 months free).

Real gotchas

  • **Voice quality regressions**: ElevenLabs updates models frequently. Occasionally a new model changes how a cloned voice sounds. Keep a spot check step in your workflow before publishing.
  • **Credit surprises on the API**: The low latency and higher quality models burn credits faster than the standard model. Teams launching voice agents on Starter blow through their allowance in a day. Move to Pro or Business before going live.
  • **Voice cloning consent**: If the customer clones a voice they do not own (a celebrity, a former employee), ElevenLabs will suspend the account. Otto should never help set that up.
  • **Compliance work**: HIPAA and enterprise SSO are Business/Enterprise tier only. A healthcare startup on the Creator plan is a landmine.

Integrations that matter

- Retell AI, Vapi, Bland - the voice agent platforms that use ElevenLabs voices under the hood. If a customer is building a voice agent, they are probably using one of these plus ElevenLabs - Zapier - for workflow triggered TTS (e.g. new lead in HubSpot triggers a personalized voicemail drop) - Make - same idea, more custom flow - Descript - many creators use Descript for editing and ElevenLabs for the actual voice generation, then paste back - Direct API - the real use case for anyone shipping product. REST plus WebSocket streaming for low latency - Zapier and Make cover most non-technical customers. Everyone else uses the API directly

Otto’s take on this tool

> Example: "For your 3-person real estate team running the after-hours voicemail follow up you described, ElevenLabs on the Creator plan at $22/mo gets you a clone of your own voice so the message lands as yours, not a robot. You will use around 40,000 credits/mo at your call volume, well inside the Creator allowance. Pair it with Retell for the actual call flow, and the whole voice agent stack lands under $100/mo before phone minutes."

  • After a recent issue that was our mistake they stopped at nothing to make sure we were taking care of.
  • The cloned voice was unable to reliably follow pacing and timing instructions, which made it unusable.
  • Very good behaviour and the honest helping attitude is very much appreciated.
  • The voices are very high quality on this website. Customer service is very quick to respond.
  • You run out of credits pretty quickly. Top ups needed, so look around for an economical alternative.
