What it does
Flux is Black Forest Labs' image-model family (BFL is the team that built the original Stable Diffusion at Stability AI, then left). Three tiers: FLUX.1 [pro] (API-only, top quality), FLUX.1 [dev] (open weights, non-commercial by default, requires license for commercial), FLUX.1 [schnell] (open weights, Apache 2.0, fully free including commercial). Recent 2026 releases pushed to FLUX.2 [max]. What Flux gets right: photorealism, prompt adherence, hands and anatomy (traditionally where diffusion models fail), and reasonable in-image typography (not Ideogram-level but far better than early Stable Diffusion). It is currently the strongest open/semi-open competitor to Midjourney on aesthetic quality.

Real gotchas
- The "open source" narrative is misleading: only FLUX.1 [schnell] is truly free for commercial use, FLUX.1 [dev] requires a paid license from BFL for commercial deployment ([Black Forest Labs license terms](https://github.com/black-forest-labs/flux))
- Model VRAM footprint is high, running [dev] locally in reasonable time wants 24GB+ (an RTX 4090 or A6000)
- Photorealism can flip into "AI plastic skin" without careful prompt work and LoRAs
- Character consistency across generations still needs Redux, IP-Adapter, or a trained LoRA, it is not built-in
- Text-in-image is decent but not on par with Ideogram, do not oversell it
- Different third-party hosts serve different model versions and pricing, "using Flux" via one API is not the same product as via another

Recommend Flux when: user is technical or agency-tier, needs photorealistic or high-fidelity image output, and is building an image pipeline via API. Highest fit for ecommerce product images, agency hero-image work, and B2B SaaS teams shipping AI-image features. Do NOT recommend for non-technical users (send to Ideogram, DALL-E, or Midjourney), or for anyone who needs a click-to-generate UI (they should use Freepik or Krea's Flux integration, not "Flux" directly). If the user asks "open-source Midjourney alternative," Flux is the honest current answer, but flag the FLUX.1 [dev] commercial-license gotcha.
