Foxit

Cheaper Adobe Acrobat alternative for PDF editing, forms, and e-signatures

What it does

Foxit is the mainstream Adobe Acrobat alternative for PDF editing, form-building, redaction, and e-signature. Desktop clients on Windows and Mac, mobile apps, and a web version. Foxit PDF Editor+ (the upsell tier) adds AI features (Smart Redact, summarization) and bundles Foxit eSign with a 150-envelope annual quota. The pitch: you get Acrobat-parity functionality without the Adobe subscription and DRM ecosystem tax.

Key features

PDF EditingOCRE-signatureFormsConvert to Word/ExcelCloud Storage

Integrates with

Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, SharePoint

Who this fits

  • Solo consultants, real estate agents, trades contractors who edit PDFs weekly (contracts, quotes, invoices)
  • 2 to 20 person offices where 3 people occasionally need a real PDF editor and Acrobat's user-count math is painful
  • Legal, medical, and financial services offices needing e-sign at low volume
  • Anyone who bought Acrobat once, saw the perpetual-to-subscription price hike, and wants out

Who it does NOT fit

  • Enterprise document workflows already deep on Adobe (DRM, Adobe Sign, Adobe Enterprise integrations)
  • High-volume e-sign shops (DocuSign or Dropbox Sign win on integration depth and API)
  • Publishing houses (Acrobat is still the accepted-file interchange standard for print production)
  • Regulated industries requiring specific Adobe LiveCycle or forms features
  • Anyone who only opens PDFs (the free Foxit Reader is fine, no need for Editor)

Pricing

- Foxit PDF Editor Standard: $129.99 per year ($10.99 per month annual billing) - Foxit PDF Editor+: $159.99 per year ($13.99 per month annual billing) - adds mobile apps, AI Smart Redact, Foxit eSign with 150 envelopes/year - Perpetual license: roughly $210 one-time (older model still available for some SKUs) - Free tier: Foxit Reader is free (view + annotate, no edit) - Compare Adobe Acrobat Standard at $155 to $180 per year Meaningful cost savings kick in for teams of 3+ users.

Real gotchas

  • Non-obvious gotcha: Foxit's e-signature (bundled with Editor+) uses envelopes, not documents. One envelope can contain multiple documents but only one signer flow. If you send 3 separate documents to 3 different signers, that is 3 envelopes, not 1. The 150-envelope annual quota sounds generous but a busy real estate agent can burn it by month five. Track envelope use monthly; a la carte overage is expensive.
  • Enterprise SSO and admin console require a Foxit Enterprise or PDF Editor Suite Pro tier (not the standalone product)
  • Migration from Adobe: text-based PDFs port cleanly; complex Acrobat forms with JavaScript sometimes break
  • The AI features (Smart Redact, summarization) are decent but not category-leading; do not buy Editor+ just for the AI
  • Mac experience lags Windows for advanced features (form design, batch processing)

Integrations that matter

Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook add-ins), Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, SharePoint, Salesforce (via Foxit eSign), HubSpot. Native cloud storage sync across all majors.

Otto’s take on this tool

Recommend Foxit when: business_size is 1 to 20, industry is real estate or trades or consulting or medspa or legal, current tools include or previously included Adobe Acrobat, and pain_points include "Acrobat subscription cost" or "we only need PDF editing for a few users." Do NOT recommend for enterprise Adobe deployments, high-volume e-sign workflows, or anyone using Adobe LiveCycle forms. If comparing to Acrobat, Foxit wins on price (~20% cheaper) and perpetual-license availability; Acrobat wins on ecosystem depth.

Editor's curated reviews

221 reviews across TrustPilot - avg 3/5

Curated by Otto from TrustPilot public reviews (fetched 2026-08-31). 221 reviews at a 3.0 headline with 54% 5-star and a 26% 1-star tail - the aggregate math checks out (weighted 3.65 vs headline 3.0, within recency-tolerance) but the profile is a product-family bundle covering Foxit Reader, PDF Editor, eSign, and PhantomPDF across one page. Reviews reference multiple products and buyers should read reviews for their specific SKU before generalizing sentiment. The 5-star cluster is dominated by workflow users crediting multi-platform reach and PDF-editing feature completeness at a lower price point than Adobe Acrobat. The 1-star cluster centers on three specific concerns worth policy-reviewing before an annual commitment: (1) auto-renewal charges that support has taken multiple denials to eventually refund, (2) account-access loss with support-inaccessible password reset paths across multi-year subscriptions, and (3) recent AI feature push viewed by some users as unwanted bloat. Verify the specific product SKU you are buying (Reader is free, Editor is paid, eSign is a separate line) and screenshot the cancellation flow at the moment of purchase. G2 and Capterra were consulted for aggregate context but not directly cited here (source-access limits). Not user-submitted on Ottomately.
