Productivity - Setup Guide

How to set up Google Slides

Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.

What you're signing up for

Zero. Every Google account already has it. slides.google.com opens directly.

Read these before you start

  • Aesthetic ceiling is low, default templates look dated. Pros use custom templates, Slidesgo, or paste designs from Figma
  • PowerPoint import/export fidelity is decent but not perfect, custom fonts, complex animations, and embedded objects often break both directions
  • Animation and transition engine is behind PowerPoint and Keynote, motion-heavy decks will disappoint
  • Offline mode requires enabling and works only in Chrome, not in Safari or Firefox
  • Gemini AI integration in Slides is Workspace Business Standard+ only, the free tier does not get AI features
  • Version history is good but has no branching, only linear history

The 7-step setup

  1. 1

    Create your Google Slides account

Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.

    Open Google Slides signup
  2. 2

    Complete the initial onboarding

Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Google Slides pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

  3. 3

    Connect your existing tools

Wire Google Slides into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Native to Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Meet, Calendar). PowerPoint (.pptx) import/export. Slidesgo, Slidesmania, Canva (via download) for templates. Adobe Express integration. Loom and Vimeo embeds. Zapier and Make. Salesforce plugin (limited). Gemini AI in Business Standard+.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

  4. 4

Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Google Slides deployments die in month 3.

  5. 5

Set up your first real workflow

Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Google Slides - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

  6. 6

Add your team (if applicable) and set access

Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

  7. 7

    Compound with the right pairings

Recommend Google Slides when: user needs a presentation tool with real-time collaboration and universal sharing, or when they're already on Google Workspace. This is the default recommendation for anyone without a specific reason to use something else. Highest fit across every team size and industry (universally applicable). Do NOT recommend when the user specifically needs high-polish design (Canva, Pitch, Beautiful.ai), motion-heavy animations (PowerPoint or Keynote), or viewer engagement anal...

Pricing you'll hit

- Free: unlimited presentations with any Google account, 15GB shared Drive storage - Business Starter: $6/user/mo (via Google Workspace), custom email, 30GB storage - Business Standard: $12/user/mo, Gemini AI in Slides, 2TB storage - Business Plus: $18/user/mo, eDiscovery, advanced security, 5TB - Enterprise: custom Slides itself is free forever.
