Productivity - Setup Guide

How to set up Grammarly

Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.

What you're signing up for

Easy. Install the browser extension, sign in, done. Native app integrations take a few clicks. Business tier setup (brand voice + style guide) takes a couple hours. The learning curve is close to zero

Read these before you start

  • Grammarly reads what you type. Do not paste customer PII, secrets, or NDA-protected content into fields where Grammarly is active without confirming your enterprise settings
  • Style suggestions are opinions, not rules. Turn them off in technical docs or you will fight the tool
  • Free tier hides the most-useful rewrite features. The upgrade is real
  • GrammarlyGO usage limits vary by plan — heavy generative use runs out on individual plans
  • Team style-guide enforcement requires the Business tier
  • Some browser combos (specifically old Safari + certain form editors) have integration bugs

The 7-step setup

  1. 1

    Create your Grammarly account

Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.

    Open Grammarly signup
  2. 2

    Complete the initial onboarding

Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Grammarly pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

  3. 3

    Connect your existing tools

Wire Grammarly into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge (browser extensions), Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Google Docs, Gmail, Slack, LinkedIn, macOS/Windows/iOS/Android native apps.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

  4. 4

Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Grammarly deployments die in month 3.

  5. 5

Set up your first real workflow

Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Grammarly - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

  6. 6

Add your team (if applicable) and set access

Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

  7. 7

    Compound with the right pairings

Recommend Grammarly when: user's business is writing-heavy (sales emails, proposals, client comms, support responses) and the team is 2+. Best fit for consulting, agencies, sales teams, and B2B SaaS. Pairs with everything — Grammarly is a horizontal utility. Do NOT recommend for solo trades operators, or for teams whose writing volume is trivially small. Business tier is the honest recommendation when team size is 5+ and brand consistency matters. Warn about privacy on sensitive fields — legal, ...

Pricing you'll hit

- Free: grammar, spelling, punctuation, basic tone detection - Pro (individual): ~$12-30/mo depending on billing cadence, rewrites, tone adjustments, GrammarlyGO generative features (with prompt limits) - Business: ~$15/user/mo (annual, 3+ seats), team style guides, brand tones, admin controls, SSO on higher tiers - Enterprise: custom quote, advanced security, SSO, analytics, custom-trained tones ...
