Ideogram

AI image generation with best-in-class text rendering

What it does

Ideogram is a text-to-image generator whose one killer feature is legible in-image typography. It spells "Grand Opening Saturday March 15" correctly and cleanly, which every other image model still routinely mangles. Also strong for logo concepts, social ads with headline text baked in, product-launch graphics, and any use case where the copy has to live inside the image. Non-typography images are competitive with DALL-E and Midjourney's baseline tier but not their top-tier aesthetic ceiling. Founded by ex-Google Imagen researchers.

Who this fits

  • Solo marketers and small-business owners producing social posts with headline text
  • Real estate agents making listing graphics ("Just Listed 3BR/2BA")
  • Medspas and local service businesses running promo images
  • Ad-copy designers testing headline variations at scale
  • Anyone who was tired of retouching Midjourney/DALL-E typography by hand

Who it does NOT fit

  • High-end cinematic image work (Midjourney and Flux Pro win on aesthetics)
  • Photorealistic product photography (Flux and specialized models beat it)
  • API-first pipelines with strict SLA needs, Ideogram's API is newer and less mature
  • Enterprise procurement requiring SOC 2 and DPA before signature

Pricing

- Free: 10 prompts/day (each prompt produces 4 images) - Basic: $7/mo, 400 priority credits (may be closed to new subscribers, see gotcha) - Plus: $16-20/mo, 1,000 priority credits, unlimited slow credits, private mode - Pro: $42-48/mo, 3,000 priority credits, batch generation, API access - Top-up packs: $4 for 150 credits (Plus) or 250 credits (Pro), roll over Annual billing takes ~25-30% off. Pricing verified against [eesel breakdown](https://www.eesel.ai/blog/ideogram-pricing).

Real gotchas

  • The "Basic" tier is being phased out for new subscribers, do not assume the $7 plan is available, verify at signup
  • Priority credits (fast) and slow credits (unlimited on Plus+) are different, running out of priority means queue times that turn a 15-second workflow into 2-3 minutes
  • Prompts requesting real-person likenesses, brand logos, or copyrighted characters are filtered
  • Private mode (generations not visible in the public feed) is Plus+ only, on Free and Basic your prompts and images are public by default
  • Ideogram 3.0's aesthetic ceiling is lower than Midjourney v7 and Flux Pro, do not oversell it for hero-image work
  • Batch generation (multiple prompts queued) is Pro-only

Integrations that matter

Native web app only, plus a REST API on Pro. Ideogram supplies APIs used by third-party image platforms (Freepik, Krea, Leonardo) but does not natively integrate with Canva, Figma, or Adobe. Zapier and Make have community connectors via the API.

Otto’s take on this tool

Recommend Ideogram when: user needs image + text baked together (social ads with headlines, promo graphics, real-estate listing images, event flyers, restaurant menus). Highest fit for real estate, medspa, ecommerce, and any small-business owner running paid social. Do NOT recommend when the user needs cinematic hero photography (send to Midjourney or Flux) or brand-consistent character/style across many images (Midjourney --cref wins). If the user asks "why can't ChatGPT/Midjourney spell?" the answer is Ideogram.

Editor's curated reviews

163 reviews across TrustPilot - avg 4/5

Curated by Otto from TrustPilot public reviews (fetched 2026-08-31). 163 total reviews at a 4.0 headline (71% 5-star, 18% 1-star). The 5-star cluster praises image quality, typography rendering (Ideogram's differentiator vs Midjourney), and support responsiveness. The 18% critical cluster splits between three complaints: API divergence from the web tool, free-tier expectations vs actual limits, and difficulty controlling text position. Distribution math (4.11) matches the headline (4.0) cleanly - no recency distortion. G2 and Capterra were consulted for aggregate context but not directly cited here (source-access limits). Not user-submitted on Ottomately.

    TrustPilot5.0/5- Customer
  • The platform is easy to use and definitely generates creative images and is great for content creators.
    TrustPilot4.0/5- Content creator
  • I feel quite cheated and misled about the service I originally signed up for.
    TrustPilot3.0/5- Customer
  • The API is entirely different from what is shown on the web. Don't bother using their API.
    TrustPilot1.0/5- Developer
  • Though it does a fair job with images there is no amount of prompting you can do to make it change text positions.
