Metabase

Open-source business intelligence and analytics tool

What it does

Metabase is a business intelligence tool built for teams that want dashboards without hiring a data analyst. The killer feature is the question builder: point-and-click "show me revenue by month for customers on the Pro plan" without writing SQL. Anyone who WANTS SQL still has a full editor with autocomplete. It ships as either an open-source self-hosted deployment (AGPL v3, free), or a managed cloud service. Sits on top of any SQL database — Postgres, MySQL, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks, SQL Server — and gives non-technical teammates a real BI tool at a fraction of Tableau's price.

Key features

No-Code QueriesDashboardsAlertsEmbeddingSQL Mode

Integrates with

PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, BigQuery, MongoDB

Who this fits

  • Startups and small-mid teams (5-100) needing dashboards without a dedicated BI hire
  • SaaS companies wanting to embed dashboards in their own product (embedding is a real feature)
  • Ecommerce and marketplace teams querying a Postgres or a warehouse
  • Any team that has tried Tableau and choked on the price and complexity
  • Data teams comfortable maintaining a Docker container for the self-hosted route

Who it does NOT fit

  • Solo founders with no database (there is nothing to connect to)
  • Trades, medspa, real estate solo agents (over-tooled — a spreadsheet works)
  • Enterprises needing enterprise-grade governance, RLS on 1,000 users, and audit history (Tableau/Looker)
  • Teams needing pixel-perfect financial reporting (Tableau or dedicated reporting tools)

Pricing

- Open Source (AGPL v3): free to self-host. Requires Docker or JAR, a JVM, and a Postgres for internal metadata. Real infra cost: $100-$200/mo for a small deployment (Source: Coefficient: https://coefficient.io/metabase-pricing) - Starter (cloud): $100/mo for up to 5 users, then ~$65/year per additional user on annual billing - Pro: $575/mo for up to 10 users, cloud or self-hosted, then ~$130/year per extra user annual - Enterprise: from $20,000/year, custom quote, priority support, deployment flexibility - Annual billing saves ~10%

Real gotchas

  • AGPL v3 license on the open-source edition. If Metabase-derived work is exposed as a networked service, the whole thing must be AGPL. Read this carefully before embedding OSS Metabase inside a commercial product (Source: Coefficient: https://coefficient.io/metabase-pricing)
  • Starter tier caps at 5 users. The jump to Pro is 5.75x — no gentle middle tier for a growing team of 6-9
  • Row-level "sandboxing" (RLS-style permissions) is Pro/Enterprise-only. OSS and Starter can't restrict what data a user sees at row level
  • Question caching helps but is per-question; heavy dashboards on cheap data warehouses can still cost real money downstream
  • Self-hosted upgrades occasionally require Postgres migrations — read the changelog before yolo-upgrading
  • Embedding: static embeds are free, interactive/signed embeds require Pro; embed pricing scales unusually and has changed multiple times
  • Not built for petabyte-scale interactive analysis. Pushes queries down to the database — bad queries hit the DB, not Metabase

Integrations that matter

Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks, MongoDB, Presto/Trino, Google Analytics (limited), SQLite, ClickHouse, Druid. Slack (dashboard subscriptions), Email (scheduled reports), Google Sheets (via connector), Zapier/Make (via API).

Otto’s take on this tool

Recommend Metabase when: business_size is 5-100, needs dashboards, and either has a database or is on a modern warehouse. Highest fit for B2B SaaS, ecommerce, and any team where "we want to see our data without paying for Tableau" is the ask. Do NOT recommend for solo, trades/services with no database, or enterprises needing formal governance. If comparing to Tableau: Metabase wins on price and speed-to-first-dashboard; Tableau wins on visualization power and enterprise governance. If comparing to Looker Studio: Looker Studio is free and better for Google Ads/GA4-only shops; Metabase is stronger for a real Postgres/warehouse. Flag the AGPL license before recommending OSS to a commercial embed use case.
