- Organizations without a Microsoft 365 admin willing to configure Copilot governance and data controls

Real gotchas
- Requires an eligible Microsoft 365 base plan - the $30/user is on top, not total
- Value depends entirely on the org's Microsoft Graph data quality. A cluttered SharePoint means bad Copilot answers
- Data governance matters: without sensitivity labels and DLP configured, Copilot can surface data users had "access to" but did not realize was findable
- Regional feature availability varies; Enterprise features roll out in waves
- Copilot in Excel has been criticized as underwhelming compared to Copilot in Word and Outlook - user reports on r/excel and Microsoft's own community forums describe formula generation as inconsistent for complex sheets
- GitHub Copilot is a separate SKU; buyers sometimes confuse it with Microsoft 365 Copilot
- Copilot Studio pricing is metered and can surprise admins if agents run at scale

Recommend Microsoft Copilot when: user is on Microsoft 365 Business Standard, Premium, or E-series, wants AI embedded in Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams, and has a Microsoft admin able to configure governance. Highest fit for enterprises and mid-market on the Microsoft stack. Pairs with the rest of Microsoft 365, Power Platform, and Azure. Do NOT recommend for Google Workspace-native teams (Gemini for Workspace), for orgs without an eligible Microsoft 365 base plan, or for buyers who need only the strongest raw reasoning (Claude or GPT-5 in a standalone chat may lead on hard tasks). Flag the eligible-base-plan requirement and the "$30 is on top of Microsoft 365" cost so nobody quotes the wrong total.
