How to set up Midjourney
Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.
What you're signing up for
Easy. First image generated within 10 minutes of joining, whether via Discord or the web app.
Read these before you start
- Midjourney is currently a defendant in multiple active, major copyright lawsuits from Disney, NBCUniversal, and Warner Bros. Discovery, alleging the tool generates and distributes unauthorized images of copyrighted characters (Darth Vader, Elsa, Bart Simpson, the Minions, Superman, Scooby-Doo, and others) — this is a real, ongoing legal risk category for the platform itself, not a resolved historical issue, and businesses using Midjourney output commercially should avoid prompts that reference or closely resemble copyrighted characters or franchises (Source: Yahoo News reporting on the Disney/NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. lawsuits, https://www.yahoo.com/news/disney-nbcuniversal-sue-ai-creator-215033381.html and https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/warner-bros-discovery-sues-ai-photo-generator-midjourney-for-stealing-superman-scooby-doo)
- Paying subscribers get broad commercial-use rights via Midjourney's terms of service, but under current US copyright law (per the Thaler v. Perlmutter precedent requiring human authorship) the AI-generated portions of an image generally cannot be claimed as copyrighted by the user — only human modifications, selective composition, and prompt-engineered creative choices layered on top may be protectable. This means weaker legal standing against someone else copying the output than a business might assume (Source: terms.law Midjourney commercial rights guide 2026, https://terms.law/2026/01/15/midjourney-commercial-use-rights-complete-2026-guide/)
- Free/trial access has been discontinued for most new signups specifically due to "extraordinary abuse" of the free tier — expect to pay from day one, there's no meaningful way to test the tool for free anymore
- No affiliate/referral program exists — this is a value recommendation for Otto, not a revenue-generating one
The 7-step setup
- 1
Create your Midjourney account
Sign up at the link below. Card required for the paid tier - most plans include a trial period; check the pricing section on this page first so you know what you're committing to.
Open Midjourney signup - 2
Complete the initial onboarding
Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Midjourney pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.
- 3
Connect your existing tools
Wire Midjourney into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Discord (the original and still-primary interface for many users).. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.
- 4
Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)
Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Midjourney deployments die in month 3.
- 5
Set up your first real workflow
Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Midjourney - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.
- 6
Add your team (if applicable) and set access
Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.
- 7
Compound with the right pairings
Recommend Midjourney when: the client needs high-quality stylized or conceptual imagery — concept art, mood boards, creative ad exploration — and understands it as a paid-only tool from the start. Do NOT recommend for final brand-critical production assets needing exact repeatable consistency (a design tool or a human illustrator fits better there), and explicitly warn against prompting for anything resembling existing copyrighted characters or franchises given the active litigation landscape. Pricing you'll hit
- Basic: $10/mo — 200 images/month - Standard: $30/mo — unlimited "relaxed" (slower queue) generation - Pro: $60/mo — fast generation hours, stealth mode (private generations not shown in the public feed) - No free tier — Midjourney has ended free trials for new users due to documented abuse of the free tier (Source: cross-checked against tools.json data and Midjourney official pricing)
