Productivity - Setup Guide
How to set up Photopea
Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.
What you're signing up for
Zero. Open photopea.com, drop a file in, start editing. No login, no install, no download.
Read these before you start
- Solo developer, no enterprise SLA, no support contract, no compliance certifications (SOC 2, HIPAA), do not use for regulated workflows
- Ads on the free tier are display banners, not blocking overlays, but they get in the way. Premium is $5/mo well spent for daily users
- Browser-based means large PSDs (500MB+ with many high-res layers) can slow down or crash the tab, Photoshop desktop handles this better
- No Camera Raw parity, Photopea reads RAW but the tone/color engine is not on par with Adobe Camera Raw for serious color work
- No generative-fill AI at Photoshop's quality (Adobe Firefly integration is a real Photoshop advantage)
- Files are processed locally in the browser, that is a privacy win but also means no cloud sync between devices unless you save to Google Drive/Dropbox
The 7-step setup
- 1
Create your Photopea account
Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.
Open Photopea signup - 2
Complete the initial onboarding
Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Photopea pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.
- 3
Connect your existing tools
Wire Photopea into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive for file open/save. Native PSD, AI, Sketch, XD, SVG, PDF, RAW, GIF, WebP support. No API for programmatic image processing. Community plugins exist but ecosystem is thin vs Photoshop.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.
- 4
Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)
Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Photopea deployments die in month 3.
- 5
Set up your first real workflow
Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Photopea - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.
- 6
Add your team (if applicable) and set access
Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.
- 7
Compound with the right pairings
Recommend Photopea when: user occasionally needs to open PSDs, edit product photos, or do quick graphic work without paying for Adobe. Highest fit for freelancers, solo operators, ecommerce, and anyone on Linux/Chromebook. Recommend Premium ($5/mo) for daily users to kill the ads. Do NOT recommend for professional retouchers, teams already on Creative Cloud, or regulated-industry work. If the user asks "free Photoshop alternative," Photopea is genuinely the answer, GIMP is powerful but the UI is...
Pricing you'll hit
- Free: full editor, all tools, browser-based, ad-supported - Premium: $5/mo monthly or $50/year annual (~17% savings), removes ads and adds priority support plus unlimited AI features - One-time-payment structure: premium is not auto-renew, subscription reverts to Free when the paid period expires Verified against [Photopea pricing 2026](https://costbench.com/software/design/photopea/). At $5/mo...
