PostHog

All-in-one product analytics: events, session replay, feature flags, A/B tests, surveys

What it does

PostHog is an all-in-one product analytics platform built as an open-source alternative to Mixpanel + Amplitude + Hotjar + Optimizely + LaunchDarkly. In one product: event analytics (funnels, trends, retention, paths), session replay (video of user sessions), heatmaps, feature flags, A/B experiments, surveys, data warehouse (query data with SQL), and CDP-style destinations. Self-hostable if you need it (real Docker/K8s deploy, not a marketing bullet). The generous free tier and open-source model made PostHog the default choice for AI startups and modern SaaS.

Integrates with

Segment, Slack, GitHub, Stripe, Zapier

Who this fits

  • B2B SaaS teams that want product analytics without paying for Mixpanel + Amplitude
  • Startups running A/B tests without a dedicated experimentation platform
  • AI-first apps needing session replay + event analytics + LLM observability (they have an LLM analytics product now)
  • Ecommerce brands wanting real product analytics beyond GA4
  • Teams that want feature flags + experiments + analytics in one tool
  • Anyone who was on Mixpanel and got sticker-shocked

Who it does NOT fit

  • Marketing-only sites where GA4 or Plausible is enough
  • Businesses whose entire "analytics" need is web sessions and conversions (GA4 is free, PostHog is overkill)
  • Teams already deep on Amplitude/Mixpanel with dashboards and event schemas invested (do not force the swap)
  • Regulated environments needing formal certifications PostHog does not yet cover (check current SOC 2/HIPAA status)
  • Non-technical businesses (real estate, trades, medspa) — nothing to track at PostHog's depth

Pricing

- Free: 1M events/mo, 5K session replays/mo, 1M feature flag requests/mo, 250 survey responses/mo — genuinely usable - Pay-per-use above free tier: ~$0.00005/event (falls with volume), ~$0.005/session replay, ~$0.0001/feature flag request - Enterprise: custom quote, SSO/SAML, dedicated support, priority ingestion, higher retention - Self-hosted: open-source, free to run (you pay for infra); enterprise-hosted support available Pricing has genuine "add-ons" model — each product (analytics, replay, flags, surveys, experiments, warehouse) has its own free tier and pay-as-you-go rate. Cost scales sensibly with actual usage.

Real gotchas

  • Event schema matters. Do not fire events with inconsistent property names — the retroactive cleanup is painful
  • Session replay bandwidth is not trivial — enable sample rate on high-traffic sites
  • Feature flags evaluated client-side leak flag names in the page source — use server-side flags for anything sensitive
  • Experiments need real traffic volume — an A/B test on 200 visitors is a coin flip, not a result
  • PII in event properties gets stored — mask carefully or exclude
  • Free-tier limits are per-product. A viral feature-flag-heavy launch can burn the flag quota separately from the event quota
  • The SQL warehouse is powerful but not a replacement for a real BI tool at enterprise scale

Integrations that matter

Next.js, React, Vue, Svelte, iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter, Python, Ruby, Go, Node, PHP, Segment (source/destination), Slack, Zapier, Salesforce, HubSpot, GitHub, Vercel, Sentry (bidirectional), most modern web frameworks.

Otto’s take on this tool

Recommend PostHog when: user is a B2B SaaS or startup team needing product analytics, replay, feature flags, or A/B testing — and does not want to stack 4 separate tools. Best fit for B2B SaaS, AI apps, and modern web ecommerce. Pairs with Vercel/Netlify (deploy), Sentry (error tracking), Slack (alerts), and any modern framework. Do NOT recommend for marketing-only sites (use GA4 or Plausible), for teams already invested in Mixpanel/Amplitude, or for non-technical businesses. If the user is on Mixpanel and complaining about price, PostHog is the modern swap and the pricing model usually wins. If they need session replay only, LogRocket or FullStory are alternatives — PostHog wins on breadth.
