Rocket.Chat
Open-source team communication platform
What it does
Rocket.Chat is an open-source, self-hostable team communication platform. Slack-style channels + DMs + threads, plus omnichannel customer support (chat widgets, WhatsApp, email, Facebook, Twitter into a single agent inbox), video conferencing (Jitsi-based), and a marketplace of apps. The differentiator: full source availability + on-premise deployment for regulated industries, defense, and governments that cannot use SaaS. Also runs as a hosted cloud SaaS for organizations that want the same product without operating it.
Free tier
Yes
Starts at
$3/mo

Key features
Integrates with
Jira, GitHub, GitLab, Zapier
Who this fits
- Regulated industries needing full data sovereignty (defense, government, healthcare, banking)
- Enterprises with strict on-premise or air-gapped deployment requirements
- Companies operating in regions with data-residency regulations SaaS providers cannot meet
- Engineering teams that want Slack-like collaboration but need code control and audit access
- Support orgs consolidating omnichannel customer chat with internal team chat in one tool
Who it does NOT fit
- SMBs and startups (Slack free tier or Discord is easier and cheaper)
- Teams without a Linux/Docker/Kubernetes operator (self-hosting is a real engineering commitment)
- Solo founders and 2 to 5 person teams (over-tooled)
- Non-technical operators who just want it to work
- Companies happy with Slack's ecosystem depth (Rocket.Chat's app marketplace is thinner)
Pricing
Real gotchas
- Non-obvious gotcha: Rocket.Chat's default MongoDB backend requires ongoing tuning as usage grows; multiple production reports document performance cliffs past 500 active users on default configurations. The fix is sharded MongoDB + Oplog tailing tuning + Redis for session cache, which is real database-ops expertise, not "install and forget." Self-hosted at scale needs a DBA-level operator or a plan to move to Rocket.Chat's cloud when you hit the wall.
- Community Edition license is MIT for source but the marketplace includes commercial-license apps
- Self-hosted upgrades occasionally require MongoDB version bumps that are non-trivial migrations
- Feature parity between Community and Enterprise widens over time; things that were free move to paid
- Omnichannel and Livechat features are Pro tier and above

Otto’s take on this tool
Recommend Rocket.Chat when: business_size is 50+, industry is regulated (defense, government, healthcare, banking) OR the user explicitly asks for open-source/self-hosted team chat, and there is a real Linux/DevOps operator on the team. Do NOT recommend for SMBs, startups, non-technical teams, or anyone who "just wants Slack but cheaper" without the operational commitment. If comparing to Slack, Rocket.Chat wins on sovereignty and cost at scale; Slack wins on ecosystem, ergonomics, and total cost of ownership for teams under ~200. If comparing to Mattermost (its closest competitor), similar architecture; Mattermost has a stronger US-federal/DevOps positioning, Rocket.Chat has better omnichannel customer-support baked in.
