Productivity - Setup Guide
How to set up Runway ML
Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.
What you're signing up for
Easy. Sign in, upload an image or type a prompt, generate. The editor is more capable and has a learning curve if you use motion tracking, keyframing, or Aleph editing seriously. Workflows (chained ge
Read these before you start
- Credits burn fast: 10 seconds of Gen-4.5 = 120 credits, so a $15/mo Standard plan buys about 50 seconds of 4.5 output per month
- The "Unlimited" plan retirement is a lesson: subscribers assumed unlimited generation, got 2,250 credits, and paid $95 for a Pro-tier allowance. Verify credit math against expected usage before recommending Max
- Commercial-use rights depend on your plan tier, Free is not commercial
- Watermarks on Free tier, removed on paid plans
- Video coherence across long clips is weak, character faces and clothing drift between scenes
- Third-party bundled models (Veo, Kling) also consume credits, potentially at different rates, check per-model cost before generating
The 7-step setup
- 1
Create your Runway ML account
Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.
Open Runway ML signup - 2
Complete the initial onboarding
Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Runway ML pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.
- 3
Connect your existing tools
Wire Runway ML into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Native web app, iOS app, plus API (Pro+). Adobe Premiere Pro plugin, DaVinci Resolve plugin, Photoshop plugin. Zapier and Make via API. Direct export to Frame.io. No native Figma or Canva integration.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.
- 4
Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)
Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Runway ML deployments die in month 3.
- 5
Set up your first real workflow
Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Runway ML - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.
- 6
Add your team (if applicable) and set access
Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.
- 7
Compound with the right pairings
Recommend Runway when: user makes video content and wants AI generation + editor in one workspace, or when they were about to subscribe to two separate video models (consolidate). Highest fit for agencies producing social video and ecommerce teams generating ad B-roll. Do NOT recommend for long-form video, budget-conscious solo users who only need occasional generation (send to Kling or Pika a la carte), or teams needing precise frame control. If the user is comparing Runway to Pika, Runway wins...
Pricing you'll hit
- Free: 125 credits (one-time), watermarked - Standard: $15/mo ($12 annual), 625 credits - Pro: $35/mo ($28 annual), 2,250 credits - Max: $95/mo ($76 annual), 9,500 credits, up to 1 month of unused credits roll over - Enterprise: custom Gen-4.5 costs 12 credits/second; Gen-4 Turbo costs 5 credits/second. Runway retired the "Unlimited" plan after community backlash (old Unlimited was $95/mo but ca...
