How to set up Sage

What you're signing up for
Medium, roughly 60 minutes for basic setup, longer for Intacct or any multi-entity/job-costing configuration, which often benefits from a certified Sage implementation partner.
Read these before you start
- Support quality is the single most consistent and severe complaint across review platforms, budget real friction into any recommendation involving ongoing support needs (Source: PissedConsumer aggregate reviews, via WebSearch summary 2026)
- Sage has a documented history of significant price increases without corresponding visible product improvements, this isn't a one-time event, treat pricing as something to re-verify regularly for existing Sage clients (Source: historical pricing report via WebSearch summary, 2026)
- Legacy version support cutoffs are real and have already happened (Sage 50 versions 26.2 and below), if a client or their current accountant is on an old install, they may be running unsupported, unpatched software without realizing it
- Data corruption and upgrade problems are reported by long-term users, this is a mature, complex product with real legacy-software risk

Complete the initial onboarding
Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Sage pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

Connect your existing tools
Wire Sage into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Microsoft 365, Stripe, PayPal, Zapier.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)
Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Sage deployments die in month 3.

Set up your first real workflow
Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Sage - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

Add your team (if applicable) and set access
Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

Compound with the right pairings
Recommend Sage narrowly, only for construction, manufacturing, or mid-size businesses with genuine job-costing or multi-entity needs that QuickBooks/Xero don't handle well. Always disclose the support-quality and pricing-volatility concerns explicitly, this is one of the tools where Otto's honesty matters most because Sage's marketing doesn't reflect the documented support complaints.
