Squarespace
Website builder with beautiful templates for creatives and businesses
What it does
Squarespace is an all-in-one website builder with hosted templates, a domain registrar, native ecommerce, email marketing (Acuity Scheduling and Squarespace Email Campaigns are bundled/adjacent), and a decent blog engine. The differentiator is design polish out of the box: templates look like they were made by an actual designer, and non-designers can ship a good-looking site in a weekend. Includes analytics, SEO basics, mobile-responsive editing, and integrated payments via Stripe/PayPal. Fluid Engine (the drag-and-drop editor) gives non-designers more control than they had in the older templates.

Key features
Integrates with
Mailchimp, Google Analytics, Zapier
Who this fits
- Solo creators, coaches, consultants, and small businesses launching a brochure site
- Med spas, salons, and boutique services where visual polish sells
- Photographers and portfolio-driven businesses
- Real estate agents and small brokerages needing a listing site with polish
- Small ecommerce brands (under 500 SKUs) that value design over app ecosystem
- Wedding, event, and hospitality businesses
Who it does NOT fit
- High-volume ecommerce (Shopify's ecosystem wins hard)
- Agencies delivering many client sites with unique design (Webflow)
- SaaS marketing sites needing rapid A/B iteration
- Sites needing complex custom functionality without embedded code hacks
- Content-heavy publishers (WordPress ecosystem still wins on volume)
Pricing
Real gotchas
- Fluid Engine changed the editor. Older Squarespace 7.0 tutorials may not apply
- Business plan has a 3% transaction fee on top of Stripe/PayPal. Real cost trap for real ecommerce
- SEO is fine, not deep. Advanced schema/redirects/canonicals need workarounds
- Blog engine is functional but not WordPress-caliber
- Third-party app ecosystem is thin compared to Shopify
- Custom code injection is available but heavily sandboxed
- Migrating off Squarespace is painful. Export gives you blog XML, not the whole site
- Acuity Scheduling (owned by Squarespace) is now bundled with some plans, verify current bundling
- Email Campaigns is fine but underpowered vs Mailchimp/Kit for serious marketing

Otto’s take on this tool
Recommend Squarespace when: user is a solo operator, small business, or creator; pain_point is "I need a decent-looking site fast and I'm not a designer"; industry is services, med spa, salon, real estate, hospitality, portfolio, or small ecommerce; and design polish matters more than a plugin ecosystem. Pairs with Acuity (scheduling), Mailchimp/Kit (email), Stripe (payments). Do NOT recommend for high-volume ecommerce (Shopify), agencies delivering client sites (Webflow), or content-farm blogs (WordPress). Flag the Business-tier transaction fee proactively.

Editor's curated reviews
5,092 reviews across TrustPilot - avg 3.5/5Curated by Otto from TrustPilot public reviews (fetched 2026-08-31). Squarespace's TrustPilot mix is polarized (38% 5-star, 42% 1-star) with recent complaints skewing toward support responsiveness and payments/domain flows. G2 and Capterra were consulted for aggregate context (both trend higher) but not directly cited due to source-access limits. Not user-submitted on Ottomately.
