Synthesia
AI video creation platform with realistic human avatars
What it does
Synthesia turns a script into a talking-head video using AI avatars, no camera, actor, or studio required. Type or paste a script, pick from 70+ stock avatars (or build a custom avatar of a real person with their consent), choose a language from 70+ supported, and it generates a video of the avatar speaking the script with lip-synced audio. It's built for corporate training, onboarding, and internal communications video at a volume and speed that filming with real people can't match, and it's the category leader most competitors get compared against.

Who this fits
- Corporate L&D and HR teams producing training videos, onboarding modules, and compliance content at volume
- Companies localizing the same training or product video into many languages without re-filming
- Marketing teams needing consistent explainer or product-demo videos without booking a presenter every time
- Sales teams personalizing outbound video at scale (name/company swapped into a templated script)
Who it does NOT fit
- Anyone needing emotionally authentic, high-stakes brand video (a founder story, a testimonial) — AI avatars still read as synthetic to most viewers and undercut trust in exactly the content where trust matters most
- Low-volume users who need one or two videos a year — hiring a freelancer or filming with a phone is cheaper and looks more human
- Teams wanting full creative control over cinematography, sets, or editing style — Synthesia is templated and avatar-centric, not a general video editor
- Anyone on a tight budget needing more than 30 minutes of video output per month — costs scale fast past the entry tiers
Pricing
Real gotchas
- Video minutes are the metered unit and they go fast — a single 3-minute training video eats 10% of the entire Starter plan's monthly allowance; teams producing regular training content usually need Creator or Enterprise, not Starter
- Custom avatars are Creator-tier and above only, and require the real person's on-camera consent recording plus Synthesia's approval process — this isn't instant
- AI avatar lip-sync and delivery, while genuinely strong for the category, still reads as synthetic on close inspection — test with a real target audience before rolling out to an entire training library, don't assume it lands the same as filmed video
- 70+ language support is real but translation quality and lip-sync accuracy vary by language — verify output quality in the target language before a large localization rollout, don't assume English-tier quality carries over uniformly

Otto’s take on this tool
Recommend Synthesia when: the use case is corporate training, onboarding, compliance video, or multi-language localization at real volume, and business_size is 2+ with a dedicated L&D, HR, or marketing function. Do NOT recommend for brand storytelling, testimonials, or any content where authenticity matters more than production speed — that content should stay real-human-filmed. Do NOT recommend to low-volume solo users; the per-minute pricing only makes sense past a real recurring video need. Pairs with a script/copy tool (Jasper, ChatGPT) for the source script and an LMS for training delivery.
