Productivity - Setup Guide
How to set up Vercel
Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.
What you're signing up for
Easy. Connect a Git repo, deploy in 60 seconds. Custom domains, env vars, and preview branches take another 30 minutes. First real production incident (bandwidth spike, function timeout, cold-start hi
Read these before you start
- Bandwidth pricing on Pro can surprise. A viral post or an unoptimized hero video can cost hundreds
- Serverless function timeouts: 10s on Hobby, 60s on Pro, up to 900s on higher tiers with configuration
- ISR writes and image optimizations bill separately — an image-heavy site can quietly rack up transformations
- Hobby plan is personal-use only. Commercial use requires Pro (this catches solo founders)
- Preview URLs are public unless you enable password protection (Pro feature) or Vercel Firewall
- Edge functions have different runtime constraints than serverless — do not use Node-only APIs in Edge
The 7-step setup
- 1
Create your Vercel account
Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.
Open Vercel signup - 2
Complete the initial onboarding
Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If Vercel pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.
- 3
Connect your existing tools
Wire Vercel into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Sentry, LogRocket, Datadog, PlanetScale, Supabase, Upstash, Neon, Prisma, Shopify (Hydrogen deploys), Stripe (via API), Cloudflare (as a CDN-in-front option), Slack, Notion.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.
- 4
Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)
Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how Vercel deployments die in month 3.
- 5
Set up your first real workflow
Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in Vercel - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.
- 6
Add your team (if applicable) and set access
Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.
- 7
Compound with the right pairings
Recommend Vercel when: user is building a frontend or full-stack web app in Next.js, SvelteKit, Nuxt, Astro, or similar. Best fit for B2B SaaS frontends, ecommerce headless builds, agencies, and marketing sites. Pairs with GitHub (source), Supabase or Neon (database), Sentry (errors), Stripe (payments), and Cloudflare (if extra CDN/security layer needed). Do NOT recommend for backend-heavy services (Fly.io, Railway, Render win), for non-code sites, or for compute-heavy workloads. If the user is ...
Pricing you'll hit
- Hobby: free, personal use only, generous limits for hobby projects (100GB bandwidth, 100GB-hrs functions, deploys unlimited but ~100/day soft limit) - Pro: ~$20/user/mo, commercial use, 1TB bandwidth, more function limits, team collaboration, previews unlimited, support - Enterprise: custom quote (typically $20K+/yr), SLA, SSO, audit logs, custom SLAs, higher limits, dedicated support - Overages...
