BLACKBOX AI

AI coding assistant with a Chrome extension that answers coding questions in-browser

What it does

BLACKBOX AI is a coding assistant positioned as a cheaper alternative to GitHub Copilot and Cursor. It runs as a VS Code extension, a Chrome extension (answers coding questions in-browser on Stack Overflow / GitHub / any page), and a standalone chat. The higher tiers add an App Builder agent, image-to-code, and multi-agent execution. Aimed at solo devs, students, and small dev teams unwilling to pay $20 per user per month for Copilot Business or $40 per user per month for Cursor Pro Max.

Integrates with

VS Code, JetBrains, Chrome

Who this fits

  • Solo developers and freelance coders
  • Students learning to code
  • Small dev teams (2 to 10) that want basic autocomplete plus chat without the enterprise Copilot bill
  • Non-developers using AI to write scripts, SQL, or spreadsheet formulas

Who it does NOT fit

  • Enterprise dev teams requiring SSO, audit logs, and IP indemnification (buy Copilot Enterprise or Cursor Business)
  • Regulated industries where code cannot cross public model boundaries
  • Teams standardized on Copilot with heavy IDE workflow investment (switching cost outweighs savings)
  • Non-technical business users (this is a dev tool, not a general assistant)

Pricing

May 2026 pricing reset moved everything to a credit-pool model: - Free: unlimited chat, basic autocomplete, daily caps - Pro: $10 per month, $20 in credits - Pro Plus: $20 per month, $40 in credits (multi-agent execution, App Builder) - Pro Max: $40 per month, $80 in credits (unlimited agent requests, SAML SSO) - Enterprise: custom Annual billing discounts roughly 15 to 20% per tier.

Real gotchas

  • Non-obvious gotcha: the credit-pool model means "unlimited" is not unlimited. A single deep agent task (App Builder generating a real repo) can burn 5 to 15 credits in one shot. Pro at $10 for 20 credits translates to maybe 2 to 4 real agent runs per month before you are throttled or paying overage. Match tier to real usage; do not assume the price is the cost.
  • IDE integration is not as deep as Cursor's whole-repo context (BLACKBOX has file-level context by default)
  • Data-privacy defaults: your code is used for product improvement unless you turn it off in settings. Toggle it off on day one for anything proprietary.
  • Enterprise contract terms are opaque; if you need IP indemnification or non-training clauses, expect a real sales cycle
  • The Chrome extension quality has been criticized in reviews (over-triggering on non-code pages)

Integrations that matter

VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Chrome (extension), GitHub (repo import for Pro Plus+), Jupyter (via extension), Discord bot for community coding. No native Slack or team-collab surface.

Otto’s take on this tool

Recommend BLACKBOX AI when: business_size is 1 to 20, industry is B2B SaaS or agency or consulting, current tools do not include Copilot Enterprise or Cursor Business, and budget for coding tools is under $50 per user per month. Do NOT recommend for regulated industries, enterprise dev orgs, or teams already deep on Copilot. If comparing to Cursor, Cursor wins on repo-context and IDE experience; BLACKBOX wins on price for casual and learning use.
