Buffer

Social media scheduling for small teams and solopreneurs

What it does

Buffer is a social media scheduling and publishing tool. Compose a post once, schedule it across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, TikTok, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky, YouTube Shorts, Mastodon, and Google Business Profile. Simple queue-based publishing, basic analytics, single-inbox reply management on paid tiers. Bootstrapped, remote-first company, one of the oldest tools in the category.

Integrates with

Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Facebook, Zapier

Who this fits

  • Solo founders and small businesses posting on 2-6 social channels
  • Content creators managing personal brand
  • Small teams needing simple scheduling without agency-scale complexity
  • Real estate agents, trades, medspas maintaining consistent local social presence
  • Anyone burned by Hootsuite's price hikes wanting a friendlier alternative

Who it does NOT fit

  • Large agencies managing 50+ client accounts (Sprout Social or Hootsuite Enterprise fit better)
  • Enterprise social listening use cases (Sprout, Brandwatch, Meltwater)
  • Teams needing deep influencer discovery or paid social integration
  • Publisher-heavy operations posting 100+ times per day per channel

Pricing

- **Free:** 3 social channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, basic publishing. Enough for solo social presence. - **Essentials:** $6/month per channel (billed annually), unlimited scheduling, analytics, engagement inbox. - **Team:** $12/month per channel, adds unlimited team members with approval workflows. - **Agency:** $120/month for 10 channels, then $6 per additional, for agencies managing multiple clients. - Pricing model is per-channel, not per-seat, which is unusual and often cheaper than Hootsuite for small teams with few channels.

Real gotchas

  • Buffer's per-channel pricing scales linearly with connected accounts. A social team managing 15 accounts pays 15x the per-channel rate; at that scale Sprout or Hootsuite may be cheaper per seat [source: buffer.com/pricing].
  • Instagram publishing requires the account to be a Business or Creator account connected to a Facebook Page. Personal accounts cannot use scheduled publishing (Meta API limit, not Buffer's fault).
  • Buffer's analytics are shallower than Sprout Social's. Fine for solo, thin for agency reporting.
  • The engagement inbox (replying to comments and DMs) is Essentials+ and does not cover all platforms equally (Instagram DMs work, TikTok comments limited).
  • Removed features quietly over the years: Buffer Reply was discontinued and merged back; the AI Assistant added in 2023 is metered on paid tiers.

Integrations that matter

Canva (design integration for post creation), Unsplash, Zapier, Google Analytics, Google Drive, IFTTT, WordPress, Shopify (limited), Meta Business Suite (native), LinkedIn (native).

Otto’s take on this tool

Default recommendation for solo founders and small businesses (under 6 social channels) that want low-cost, reliable social scheduling without agency features. Recommend Later when the client is Instagram-heavy or visual-first. Recommend Hootsuite when the client already uses it and wants inbox and listening. Recommend Sprout Social when the client is an agency or enterprise needing deep analytics and CRM-grade inbox.

Editor's curated reviews

117 reviews across TrustPilot - avg 3.4/5

Curated by Otto from TrustPilot public reviews (fetched 2026-08-31). Buffer's TrustPilot is bimodal (29% 5-star / 44% 1-star of 117 total) with a 3.4 headline. Positive reviews center on speed and ease-of-use for creator workflows; the critical cluster is dominated by two specific patterns: (a) the newer 'reminder-only' posting for platforms without a formal API (users expected auto-posting), and (b) API-credit / connection-refresh friction. The bimodal shape is real signal - read both clusters before subscribing, especially if your workflow depends on YouTube Shorts or Instagram Reels auto-publishing. G2 and Capterra were consulted for aggregate context but not directly cited here (source-access limits). Not user-submitted on Ottomately.

  • THE ONLY WAY I CAN POST ON YT YESSSS 10/10 would recommend fast posting
  • It makes my content creation workflow so much easier and manageable.
  • Easiest scheduling platform I've ever used! Thank you!!!
  • Great easy to use platform
  • Nothing goes directly from Buffer- it sends you a reminder to 'post it yourself.'
  • The posting has been unstable and unreliable, which completely defeats the purpose.
  • The connection is a pain, always not connecting my account and hard to refresh.
  • Send emails claiming you have used all your API credits which is untrue.
