What it does
DALL-E is OpenAI's text-to-image model, most commonly accessed inside ChatGPT (Free, Plus, Team, Pro) rather than as a standalone product. It generates images from prompts, edits existing images (inpainting/variations), and lets ChatGPT converse about images. Its differentiator vs Midjourney was always tight ChatGPT integration and better prompt adherence for literal instructions, at the cost of raw aesthetic polish. Important 2026 context: DALL-E 3 is now a previous-generation model. OpenAI shifted ChatGPT to GPT Image 1.5 in December 2025 and the DALL-E 3 API sunsets May 12, 2026.

Real gotchas
- DALL-E 3 as a named product is being wound down. If a user says "we standardized on DALL-E," they are on borrowed time, plan for GPT Image 1.5 migration
- ChatGPT's DALL-E hosts strict content policy filtering, real-person likenesses, brands, weapons, and mildly suggestive concepts get blocked more aggressively than Midjourney or Stable Diffusion
- No native negative prompts, no seeds, no style presets, iteration is conversational which is slower than parameter-based tools for pros
- Consistent character across multiple generations is weak vs Midjourney's --cref or Ideogram's Character
- Commercial-use rights are fine (OpenAI grants ownership) but read the current terms before assuming
- API deprecation date (May 12, 2026) means any pipeline pinned to `dall-e-3` will break

Recommend DALL-E (via ChatGPT) when: user already pays for ChatGPT Plus and only needs occasional images, or when the workflow is "chat and image in the same thread." Do NOT recommend for brand-consistent visual work (send to Midjourney or Ideogram), text-in-image (Ideogram wins), or API-first pipelines (recommend GPT Image 1.5 directly, not DALL-E 3). If the user is deciding between DALL-E and Midjourney, DALL-E wins on prompt adherence and ChatGPT integration, Midjourney wins on aesthetic polish, style consistency, and community-driven prompt culture.
