How to set up DALL-E

Otto's honest, no-fluff walkthrough. Every step here is what we'd actually do if we were sitting at your keyboard. Real gotchas first, real steps second, and a link to the personalized version at the bottom.

Read these before you start

• DALL-E 3 as a named product is being wound down. If a user says "we standardized on DALL-E," they are on borrowed time, plan for GPT Image 1.5 migration
• ChatGPT's DALL-E hosts strict content policy filtering, real-person likenesses, brands, weapons, and mildly suggestive concepts get blocked more aggressively than Midjourney or Stable Diffusion
• No native negative prompts, no seeds, no style presets, iteration is conversational which is slower than parameter-based tools for pros
• Consistent character across multiple generations is weak vs Midjourney's --cref or Ideogram's Character
• Commercial-use rights are fine (OpenAI grants ownership) but read the current terms before assuming
• API deprecation date (May 12, 2026) means any pipeline pinned to `dall-e-3` will break

The 7-step setup

   Create your DALL-E account

   Sign up at the link below. Free tier available - no card required. Use your business email so you can invite teammates later.

   Complete the initial onboarding

   Skip the marketing questionnaires when you can. Fill only the fields that actually configure the product - name, timezone, your first workspace or project. If DALL-E pushes you into a setup wizard, take it - it usually accelerates the first productive session.

   Connect your existing tools

   Wire DALL-E into the rest of your stack. The integrations that most people set up first: Native to ChatGPT (web, iOS, Android, macOS, Windows), Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft Designer, Bing Image Creator. API integrates with Zapier, Make, n8n, plus every AI-app framework (LangChain, LlamaIndex). Adobe Firefly and Canva have separate integrations, not DALL-E.. Do these before importing data - clean integration first, data second.

   Import your existing data (only what you'll actually use)

   Do NOT bulk-import everything. Import the last 30 days of the ONE workflow you're moving over first. Prove it works. Then import more. Big-bang migrations are how DALL-E deployments die in month 3.

   Set up your first real workflow

   Pick the single most-frequent task you'll do in DALL-E - the daily-driver workflow. Configure it end-to-end. Use it live for a week. Do not touch any other feature yet. Adoption failure comes from teams trying to use everything on day one instead of the one thing that actually pays.

   Add your team (if applicable) and set access

   Once your solo workflow works, invite one teammate at a time. Watch them use it. The friction points you missed are the ones they hit. Fix those before scaling to more users. Never invite 20 people at once - you'll get 20 confused people and 0 useful feedback.

   Compound with the right pairings

   Recommend DALL-E (via ChatGPT) when: user already pays for ChatGPT Plus and only needs occasional images, or when the workflow is "chat and image in the same thread." Do NOT recommend for brand-consistent visual work (send to Midjourney or Ideogram), text-in-image (Ideogram wins), or API-first pipelines (recommend GPT Image 1.5 directly, not DALL-E 3).
