Stripe

Payments infrastructure for internet businesses

What it does

Stripe is the default developer-friendly payment platform. Accepts cards, wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link), ACH, wires, BNPL (Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay), and international payment methods (SEPA, iDEAL, Bancontact, Alipay, WeChat Pay, more). Beyond checkout, Stripe includes billing (subscriptions, invoicing), Connect (marketplace payouts), Terminal (in-person POS hardware), Radar (fraud), Sigma (SQL over your payment data), Atlas (LLC/C-Corp incorporation), Issuing (virtual and physical cards), Capital (revenue-based lending), Tax (automatic sales tax), and Payment Links (no-code checkout URLs). It is used by ~1M businesses and is often the reason a founder can accept card payments in an afternoon.

Integrates with

Shopify, WooCommerce, QuickBooks, Zapier

Who this fits

  • Any business needing online payments (subscription, one-time, marketplace)
  • SaaS companies (Stripe Billing is best-in-class for recurring revenue)
  • Ecommerce brands (integrates with Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, custom builds)
  • Consultants and agencies invoicing clients (Stripe Invoices work at zero setup cost)
  • Marketplaces paying out sellers/providers (Stripe Connect)
  • Restaurants and retail with online orders (integrates with common POS/ordering tools)
  • Fintech and vertical SaaS building payment features into their own product

Who it does NOT fit

  • Businesses in industries Stripe considers "high risk" and will not underwrite (adult, some CBD, some firearms, some gambling — check first)
  • International markets Stripe does not yet operate in (check the list)
  • Businesses whose bank prefers a specific processor for merchant-services bundling (edge case, but real)
  • Non-profits looking for the absolute lowest processing rate (some non-profit-specific processors offer 2.2% instead of 2.9%)

Pricing

- Standard cards (US): 2.9% + 30¢ online, 2.7% + 5¢ in-person - International cards: +1.5% surcharge on top - Currency conversion: +1% surcharge - ACH: 0.8% capped at $5 - Wire: $8 flat - Instant payouts: 1.5% fee (standard 2-day payouts free) - Stripe Billing (subscriptions): 0.5% additional above the basic transaction fee, or 0.7% on Scale plan - Radar for Fraud Teams: 5¢ per screened transaction beyond basic Radar - Payment Links, Invoices, Checkout: free to use, just standard processing - Custom pricing available at high volume (typically starts negotiating around $80K+/mo)

Real gotchas

  • Payouts hold for 2 days on new accounts and up to 7 days for high-risk industries — plan cash flow
  • Chargeback fees are $15 per dispute regardless of outcome. High dispute rate can get accounts frozen
  • Radar Rules require some tuning — the defaults are aggressive on some legitimate transactions
  • Stripe Tax is $0.50/transaction on the low tier — surprise fee for high-volume, low-ticket
  • Instant payouts fee (1.5%) is easy to accidentally enable
  • Account freezes are rare but real — high refund rate, sudden volume spikes, or a fraud pattern can trigger a review that pauses payouts
  • Sub-processor for a non-US bank: takes longer to set up and payout timing shifts

Integrations that matter

Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Squarespace, Wix, Webflow, Bubble, Framer, Zapier, Make, QuickBooks Online, Xero, HubSpot, Salesforce, Recurly, Chargebee, ProfitWell/Paddle, Segment, Amplitude, Mixpanel, most SaaS billing tools.

Otto’s take on this tool

Recommend Stripe when: user needs online payments. Almost universal fit. Best answer for SaaS billing, ecommerce checkout, and any modern payment need. Pairs with Shopify (if ecom), QuickBooks/Xero (accounting), Stripe Tax (if selling in multiple US states with nexus), and a subscription-management layer if the billing model is complex (Recurly, Chargebee, or Stripe's own Billing). Do NOT recommend for high-risk industries Stripe declines, or for businesses whose motion is entirely offline. Always mention chargeback fees and the 2-day payout window when the user is cashflow-sensitive. For a new business, Stripe is the safe default; only look at Square, PayPal, or an alternative when the user has a specific reason (in-person POS at scale — Square wins; cross-border UX — Wise or Airwallex).
