Wise

Multi-currency business account and international transfers

What it does

Wise (formerly TransferWise) is a multi-currency business account plus cross-border payment rail. Sends and receives money in 40+ currencies at the real mid-market exchange rate with transparent per-transfer fees, holds balances in each currency, and issues local receiving details (US ACH routing, UK sort code, EUR IBAN, AUD BSB) so US customers can pay you in USD as domestic ACH even if your business is UK-registered. Also issues debit cards for spending in any currency without the 3% FX markup banks charge. Real fit is international freelancers, agencies with cross-border clients, and businesses paying overseas contractors.

Key features

Integrates with

Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent

Who this fits

  • Freelancers and consultants with international clients
  • Agencies invoicing across borders (US-registered agency with EU clients, or vice versa)
  • Remote-first teams paying contractors in multiple countries
  • Ecommerce sellers on international marketplaces (Amazon EU, Etsy international)
  • Small SaaS companies with international customers
  • Anyone paying international vendors and tired of Bank of America's 3% FX plus $30 wire fee

Who it does NOT fit

  • Businesses that only operate domestically (a local business bank is simpler)
  • Enterprises needing complex treasury/FX hedging (Wise is a payment tool, not treasury)
  • Businesses needing lending, credit lines, or merchant services (Wise does none of these)
  • Cash-intensive businesses (Wise is bank-account-only)
  • Anyone who needs cash deposits or check acceptance

Pricing

- Business account setup: ~$31 one-time fee (varies by region) - No monthly fee, no minimum balance - International transfers: real mid-market exchange rate + variable transparent fee (typically 0.4-1% depending on corridor) - Receiving USD, GBP, EUR, AUD, CAD, and others: free for domestic-format inbound (ACH, SEPA, etc.) - Debit card: free issuance, no FX markup, small ATM withdrawal fees above monthly free allowance

Real gotchas

  • **Wise's receiving limits vary by which US routing number you get, and business accounts on the 026 routing have a 60-day rolling cap of $400,000 USD, while 084 routing has no limits** (Wise US blog on business account limits, 2026). Larger businesses hit the 026 cap sooner than expected. Additionally, Wise has closed business accounts mid-review while holding balances under compliance review with no committed timeframe - BBB complaints document this pattern (Wise US Inc. BBB complaints file, 2026). Do not treat Wise as your only operating account.
  • Wise is a money-service business in most jurisdictions, not a bank - deposits are NOT FDIC-insured the same way US bank deposits are (Wise holds funds in safeguarded accounts, which is different from FDIC coverage).
  • Compliance reviews can freeze incoming payments while support "reviews" - support escalation is slow per multiple reviews.
  • Wise does not offer merchant services - you cannot accept card payments through Wise, only bank transfers.
  • Currency-conversion timing matters - converting during volatile hours can shift the rate.

Integrations that matter

QuickBooks Online, Xero, FreshBooks, Wave, Zapier, native REST API for programmatic transfers, Payoneer alternative for marketplace payouts (Amazon, Etsy, Shopify). Batch payment uploads via CSV for paying many contractors at once.

Otto’s take on this tool

Recommend Wise when: business_type is freelancer/agency/consulting/SaaS/ecommerce, use case is international invoicing or paying overseas contractors, and the buyer is being killed by bank FX and wire fees. Do NOT recommend as a business's only operating account (compliance reviews and account closures do happen), as a merchant services replacement (Wise is not a card processor), or for domestic-only businesses (a US business bank is simpler). Always flag the FDIC-vs-safeguarded distinction and the 60-day cap on 026 routing so users are not surprised at scale. Pair Wise with a proper US business bank account, not instead of one.

Editor's curated reviews

299,099 reviews across TrustPilot - avg 4.3/5

Curated by Otto from TrustPilot public reviews (fetched 2026-08-31). Wise's TrustPilot profile is unusually large (299,099 reviews at 4.3/5, 80% 5-star) and MERGES the Wise personal (money transfer) and Wise Business accounts under one listing. The overall positive skew reflects the successful-transfer consumer use case, which dominates volume. Buyers evaluating Wise BUSINESS specifically should read the 9% 1-star cluster carefully - it contains the merchant-side risk that dominates payment-processor complaints elsewhere in this category (Stripe, PayPal): account suspensions with no concrete reason, funds paused mid-transaction, and support-response friction. This is a personal-vs-business signal mismatch, not a data quality problem - the reviews are real; the question is which population's experience matches yours. G2 and Capterra were consulted for aggregate context but not directly cited here (source-access limits). Not user-submitted on Ottomately.

  • Convenient, simple, and honest. I can recommend it as a reliable companion.
  • Overall we love wise however changing your country of residence is a pain and after 6 months.
  • They have recently paused my transaction with no real explanation for the reason.
  • Wise suspended my Business account without a single concrete reason given, only vague references.

  • Literally the worst customer support I've ever experienced. Spent about an hour explaining my problem.
